Winter Dry Skin

Winter is the time of year for chapped lips, cracked hands, and a dull complexion. Maybe like me you have tried every remedy and still are suffering from weather induced dryness. So here are some tips to help alleviate chapped dry skin.

Tip 1: Apply lotion within 3 minutes of getting out of a shower.

The air is extra dry in winter time from running the heat to keep the cold away. With that comes rapid loss of moisture. Add your moisturizer within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower guarantees both added moisture protection, but also seals in your bodies own moisture per Jacalyn Beiler, PA in dermatology.

Tip 2: Get a humidifier

Again with running the heat the moisture in ones home reduces leading to not only dry dull skin but also stuffy noses. I suggest investing in a whole house humidifier if possible. If that is too expensive then run a room humidifier while you sleep.

Tip 3: Hyaluronic Acid

I spoke with my friends at Physician Skin Services https://physicianskinservices.com who recommend using a lotion with hyaluronic acid in it. Hyaluronic acid on the face will reduce fine lines and plump skin. It does this by sealing in the skins moisture. This is a double bonus not only will you be reducing the signs of aging, but you will also have smoother, plumper, softer skin. So if your skin is feeling more dull than dewy I would be looking for a lotion with hyaluronic acid. Physician Skin Services recommended Skin Medica TNS Essential Serum (what they label the gold standard for anti aging and dryness) and Skin Medica Ha5 Rejuvinating Serum.

If Hyaluronic acid is too hard on your skin I have liked Trader Joes Lotion both the body and the face. I find them to be excellent for highly sensitive skin. Jackie Beiler, PA, recommends using a mild cleanser that doesn’t strip the natural oils such as Vanicream, Lubriderm, or Cetaphil.

Tip 4: Drink Water

It goes without saying, but if you aren’t consuming enough water how can you have enough water in your skin. Get a 32oz water bottle and aim to drink 2 bottles a day. This will help provide your body and cells with the needed fluid to do its job.

Tip 5: Exfoliate

If you are noticing flaking skin then aim for a weekly exfoliation. This will sloth off any loose skin and create a fresh new layer of skin that hasn’t been hit by the elements. Make sure to moisturize within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower or exfoliating.

Tip 6: See a professional

If you are still struggling with dry skin then it may be time to see a dermatologist or skin specialist. You may ben suffering from something more than just dry skin. If your dry skin is severe you may need prescription strength products or consider a more advanced spa therapy such as a laser, peel, or skin pen. Hopefully these tips help you keep your dewy glow all year round.
